CUSTER, SD, HONORED AS "PHILANTHROPIC COMMUNITY OF THE YEAR".
PHILANTHROPY IN SOUTH DAKOTA: South Dakota Community Foundation has put together a video highlighting Operation Black Hills Cabin as well as several other individuals who embrace philanthropy in our State. They have interviewed one of our past veteran families and have toured our cabin and the "Healing Hike". Click HERE to watch this informative video. This is truly OUR STORY. Thank you SDCF!
FINDING A NEW NORMAL: In response to Custer's local Lunafest video competition, Operation Black Hills Cabin entered our video entitled "Finding A New Normal". This heart wrenching video gives the viewers a glimpse into the reality of life with a wounded warrior from the wife's point of view. Our Thanks goes to Brendyn Medina who produced this video. You can find this video on You Tube under Operation Black Hills Cabin.
HEALING HIKE: Many of our returning wounded veterans suffer from traumatic brain injuries, post traumatic stress syndrome as well as the loss of arms, legs, etc. In some instances, these injuries prevent the wounded veteran from going to the Black Hills attractions due to the large crowds or noisy situations. Our Healing Hike consists of a wandering path through the trees with picnic tables, benches and even a hammock. It is located adjacent to the cabin and portions of this hike are wheelchair accessible. This Hike provides a setting for the wounded veteran and family to reflect and find that much-needed peace within nature's soothing atmosphere. The 34th Aircraft Maintenance Unit from Ellsworth Air Force Base donated time and material to the design and development of the Healing Hike. The money used for the materials was raised by flying United States flags on B1 aircraft missions over Iraq and Afghanistan. Individuals donated money for these memorial flags. The 34th AMU initiated the work on the OBHC Healing Hike with a group of 30-40 volunteers in April, 2014. Check out photos of their work in our Photo Gallery.
VETERAN'S DAY VIDEO: Veteran's Day has become more than just a 3-day weekend in November off of work. Click HERE to listen to Board Member, Carol Johnson relate how her experience with Operation Black Hills Cabin has changed her outlook.

NEWSCENTER ONE VIDEO: OBHC was featured in Newscenter One's Morning Show on May 27, 2015 in recognition of Military Appreciation Month. We thank Newscenter One for their continued involvement with Operation Black Hills Cabin. Every veteran receives a once in a life-time "Quilt Of Valor" in appreciation for their service and sacrifice. This loving gift is cherished by all the veterans and made possible by our local quilt guilds. Many tears are shed when the quilt is presented to each family.

FOX NEWS KEEPING OUR MISSION ALIVE: We were honored to be invited to the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Hidden Heroes Summit in Washington, DC. Getting the word out about Operation Black Hills Cabin and public awareness about the plight of our combat-wounded military veterans and families is our biggest challenge. The "Hidden Heroes", who are the caregivers, often feel isolated, hopeless and depressed. However, their love and dedication to the wounded veteran and their never-ending goal of keeping their family together, happy and healthy, remain their top priority. OBHC feels very fortunate to play a role in helping them do just that by providing our one-week respite in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We are also extremely grateful to FOX NEWS for their continued reporting and involvement with Operation Black Hills Cabin.
